Strategies for Fostering Emergent Literacy
Produced & Directed by Jon Silver
Project Coordinator: Carol Booth Olson
Two exemplary primary grade literacy lessons are interwoven with description and explanation of the teaching strategies. In the first lesson, "Teaching Sentence Structure Through Poetry," Viviana Bro models and explains step-by-step this literacy lesson that improves student writing skills and promotes enjoyment of writing in her linguistically diverse classroom. Students develop a word bank, classify words into parts of speech (adjectives, nouns and verbs), and write poems independently and together as a class.
In the second lesson "Literature circles," second grade teacher Renee Keeler creates a comfortable classroom environment for literature appreciation and student interaction. Each student has a specific job: summarizer, questioner, reader, word finder, and artist, roles that help the whole group develop and discuss ideas about their assigned readings.
