The Trials of Juan Parra - La Historia de Juan Obrero

Produced & Directed by Jon Silver

A community Teatro (play) based on the true story of a cannery worker's struggle against workplace discrimination. Performed in a comedia-del-arte style before a live audience for Cinco de Mayo in 1984, this bilingual (English-Spanish) drama is intercut with interviews of the actors discussing the play and its connections to issues of work, language, and race in food processing plants in Watsonville, California. The Trials of Juan Parra was written by Frank Bardacke, directed by a founding member of the San Francisco Mime Troupe, Ron (RG) Davis, and features community actors, activists, and local cannery workers.
